Development Artist here

Sally Hilton Perez is one of our current Talent Development Scheme artists. She began her artistic journey with Sheba Arts back in 2018 as a performer. Since then, she has received various commissions and taken part in creative workshops and events.

In 2021, Sally was commissioned by Sheba Arts to develop the concept of 'La Nagualita'. Working in collaboration with theatre director, Maddie Wakeling, and writer/ designer, Sophie Gardiner, she created a piece of work which was initially shared at Sheba Festival 2021 in Manchester.
La Nagualita tells the story of an isolated village haunted by the mysterious ‘Nagual’, a witch that transforms into a jaguar during the New Moon. A young woman lives as an outsider in her village, where she is tormented by the villagers, and comes to terms with her destiny that is entwined with the Nagual. La Nagualita explores identity and belonging through interweaving ancient mythology and the contemporary struggle for trans equality.

Audience feedback from the 2021 performance of La Nagualita:

‘This was the first time I attend a show that’s done by a refugee LGBT I hope she make the full show’
‘It was vivid. Powerful. Well done Sally’
‘Costumes were amazing’

La Nagualita in 2023

In 2023,  Sally was again commissioned to develop La Nagualita even further.  The work was developed collaboratively with four other performers each with lived experience of migration. Maddie Wakeling and Sophie Gardiner returned as integral parts of the project team. The final sharing was the closing event of Sheba Festival 2023 at the Instituto Cervantes (Deansgate).
